Blind has many definitions. Consider this one: lacking all sense of consciousness or awareness. With that, consider this next one: not characterized or determined by reason or control. My mom used to always fuss at me when I stared at the sun...haha, I can still hear her saying "Rachel! You better stop that before you go blind!" The strange kiddo that I was loved looking into its light for a couple brief seconds and then seeing spots for the moments that followed...cheap form of entertainment! What's crazy is that a second in the sun's presence completely altered my sight, the pureness of it's light and unwillingness to compromise with darkness was beyond anything my limited senses could handle...it blinded me (in a temporary sense, thankfully)- and that fact alone kept me curiously going back for more.
God says we were all once blind/dead in our transgressions Colossians 2:13 (Message) says "When you were stuck in your old sin-dead life, you were incapable of responding to God. God brought you alive- right along with Christ! Think of it! All sins forgiven, the slate wiped clean, that old arrest warrant canceled and nailed to Christ's Cross." Catching a glimpse of Jesus, like that blazing sun, has forever altered my vision...in fact, it's forever enabled my vision. I pray that God would blind my heart to the desires of the world...that His presence would consume my entire being- that I would literally crave more and more sight into who He really is...and that it would be so overpowering that I'd be able to do nothing less than fall to my knees in worship...
Back to those definitions. I'm glad God's spared me from lacking all sense of spiritual consciousness or awareness...I definitely don't have it all figured out- but the beauty of it all is that true spiritual sight isn't at all determined by reason or control- if anything, it's meant to work oppositely...the Gospel is the complete lack of reason and loss of self-control...it's coming before Jesus, seeing that gift, and surrendering it all...It's His grace alone that allows us see these colors of reality that are beyond our worldly limitations.
That's blinded by sight.
